western summer cx league round 7 race report

last night saw a return to cyclo-cross racing at odd down in bath for the first time in many years.  for those fortunate enough to live in the south west of england and who are into cx we have both a winter and summer western league.  last nights race was round 7 of a 10 round summer series that was officially hosted by andy stewart of bath cycling club but that also had input and support from myself of velo club walcot and charles coleman of dream cycling.  charles and i were involved along with andy in the initial course design but it was andy that spent endless hours working through the administration and getting his hands dirty (literally) in bringing the course up to the standards required by british cycling and health and safety.  a massive thanks goes to andy for all his work.

in addition to andy's work there was plenty of social media promotion courtesy of bath cc, vc walcot, odd down racing circuit and myself.  all this work and hype produced possibly the biggest field of this summer series so far with around 50 riders (tbc).  the great thing about this was that it was the first time some of the riders had experienced cx so hopefully a few of them will be back for more and the series will see an uplift in numbers.

unfortunately i was not able to ride as i had to take up marshaling duties last minute.  i will have to wait until the winter series gets going and there is a return to odd down sometime in october or november.  on the subject of marshaling duties many people stepped up from the local cycling community and gave their evening up to help make the event a success so a massive thanks goes out to all of them.  i won't name the names here but they know who they are.

as for those who did race initial feedback appears to be positive with many of the riders having commented that they enjoyed the race on what was a technical course featuring a section of the tarmac racing circuit as well as a section of the bmx track next door plus the usual grass sections and some single track sloped woodland.  incidentally the winner was a certain mr charles coleman who for want of a more appropriate phrase crushed it with an impressive win that climaxed in his rear tire exploding on the final corner to the line (i think he was using tubeless, so no punctures just explosions!)

below are two videos of the first lap or so from last nights race courtesy of anthony and doug.  they give a really good flavour for the kind of fun that was experienced in a race that was nevertheless described by one rider as a 'lactic acid bath'!  hey, no pain no gain as they say.

i will be back racing at next weeks round 8 event so look out for more race reports here.

Great report Jason, thanks again for your help and sorry you didn't get a ride in. Hopefully next time we won't need quite so many marshals around the BMX track ;-)
