giro pink

as you can see from the hints of pink that feature throughout my blog i am a big fan of the colour. this liking for the colour pink certainly transfers over into one of my favourite colours for clothing.

although an excuse is never needed to wear pink late april always feels like a fitting time to don all things rosa with the start of the giro d'italia only a few days away.

so this is me in a fausto coppi t-shirt designed by peter locke of urban hunter who happen to be the sellers of a wide range of quality cycling related products including an impressive array of cycling t-shirts.

hand screened with soft to the touch eco friendly inks this giro pink combo with the colours of the italian flag is already getting plenty of air time from me.

the fausto coppi racer t-shirt, giro pink is available from urbanhunter.biz.

zipp contour bars and 145 stem

i am selling my zipp contour bars and 145 stem due to the stem being 10mm too long.  it would have been a shame to split the bars and stem since they work so well together so i decided to sell them as a set.  i am happy to ship worldwide.  for more information and to place a bid click here.

hell of the west cyclo-cross sportive

a few years back i was turned off by the idea of paying money to take part in organised rides, instead favouring the simplier and cheaper option of going out and riding with my friends for free.  however, i do see value in organised events particularly if, like the lionheart sportive, the route takes the rider through places they would otherwise not necessarily ride through, and there is certainly value in there being orgainsed food stops along the way, a particularly important feature for the longer distance rides.  that all said i did not think i would be entering any more sportives this year until i saw the hell of the west.

set in beautiful and rugged dartmoor, in devon, the hell of the west is one of a newer breed of sportives aimed at the cyclo-cross market featuring 100km of trails, moorland tracks, lanes and a few ‘special’ sections thrown in for good measure.  it has given me a great excuse to give my cx bike and i a proper work out ahead of the tradional start to the cx autumn / winter season, so i have gone ahead and registered myself.  bring the mud!

bath cycle races

this may will see the return of cycle racing to the royal victoria park in bath. following on from it's successful introduction in 2011, bath cycle races 2012 features a 5 week series that will run every Wednesday evening throughout May.  round 1 starts at 6.45pm, wednesday 2nd may, with each evening being hosted by one of the local cycling clubs in association with british cycling.
supported by bath and north east somerset council, the series is part of the council’s campaign to make bath a more cycle friendly city and by all accounts following last year’s launch they are succeeding.

the short and sharp nature of the circuit, which includes a tight turn around the obelisk, promises fast and furious racing, great for spectators and competitors alike.  each round will see 4 races catering for youth’s through to elite categories.

new this year, it is also planned to hold ‘go ride’ events in the park to cater for younger children and aspiring racers in advance of the main races.

five local clubs are running the 2012 series, with avonlea treasure race team, bath cycling club, bath university cycling club, somer valley cycling club and velo club walcot each hosting one round.  by working together the local clubs are able to ensure each evening is well supported and the series is a success.

participants can enter as many of the rounds as they wish. points will be awarded in each round with series champions being crowned and prizes awarded at the final event.  race information and entry details can be found on ‘the races’ page, and spectators are encouraged to come and watch this free event.

it is also planned that there will be a sixth race evening taking place during the Bike Bath cycle festival on Saturday 23rd June at Royal Victoria Park. Details for these races can be found on http://www.bikebath.co.uk/.

la fleche avon

photo: nick rearden
last sunday saw velo club walcot's annual homage event to the spring classics in the form of la fleche avon.  the image above shows the riders gathering opposite the guildhall in the centre of bath at 09.30am, which happens to be the time and place all vc walcot rides set off every sunday morning.  i mention this in passing just in case any of you out there in the big wide world happen to be visiting little old bath and want to head out on a group ride through the surrounding beautiful countryside.  now you know the time and place you have no excuses.

photo: laurie chalk
why la fleche avon? well the name is of course a play of words name checking the famous belgian classic la flèche wallonne as well as the river avon which runs through the cities of bristol and bath. like the belgian classic which features the infamous mur de huy climb, the area surrounding bath is littered with huyesque climbs, so much so i even heard david harmon on eurosport compare the area used to race the amstel gold course, not a million miles from the belgian ardennes, as being similar to bath. punchy riders like phillipe gilbert or indeed this years winner in huy joaquim rodriguez would be in their element on the harsh gradients in and around the area we ride in.

the main difference between this and any other sunday ride was the number of people who turned up which with around 16 of us was a little over double the typical number who usually roll out of a sunday morning.  the other difference is that the rides have gradually been getting longer in length and will continue to do so as the season progresses usually peaking at somewhere close to 60/70 miles in old money with the occasional longer jaunt thrown in.  this ride however, was a more inclusive affair emphasising the strong social aspect of the club.  with a relatively short distance, somewhere close to 35 miles, and a conversational pace all levels of riders were able to enjoy themselves and nobody was left behind.  in fact it an unwritten rule of the sunday ride that we always wait for the last man.  that all said the topography of our surroundings were truly embraced as we battled our way up countless climbs some of which were real leg breakers.

there has been talk of more classics influenced and /or special event rides to take place during the course of this summer.  next up will be bath-clevedon-bath which will take the riders to the town of clevedon on the north somerset coast where upon a well earned stop will be made for fish and chips before heading home again.  total distance should be somewhere in the region of 60 miles and the ride will take place in middle/late june (tbc).  before that though the sunday rides will continue every week as usual.  to keep up to date with what is happening at velo club walcot including information on all upcoming rides and events check out the club website at http://www.vc-walcot.com/.

slaying the badger. lemond, hinault and the greatest ever tour de france

i have spoken before about how i became a fan of bike racing. like many in the uk it was through channel 4's coverage of the tour de france which began in the second half of the 1980's. alas i only have vague recollections of grainy footage in my minds eye, like old dreams that one never forgets and cannot quite remember the details of. memories of sean yates high speed descents, stephen roche collapsing and being given oxygen atop la plagne and of course greg lemond clinching victory by the narrowest of margins from laurent fignon in the final stage of the 1989 tour come to mind but surprisingly i cannot recollect having watched the 1986 tour. some argue it was the greatest ever including richard moore who brings the 1986 edition alive in his book 'slaying the badger: lemond, hinault and the greatest ever tour de france'.

bernard hinault, also affectionately known as the badger, and greg lemond were two of the strongest riders in the pro peloton back in the mid-1980's.  in 1984 french businessman bernard tapie created the la vie claire team with paul koechli as director.  the team included bernard hinault who had left renault-elf-gitane the previous year after team mate fignon had won the 1983 tour while hinault was injured.  lemond was then poached a year later from renault on a record one million dollar contract.  with hinault and lemond at the helm plus an all star supporting cast including andy hampsten, jean-françois bernard and steve bauer, la vie claire was undoubtedly the strongest on the planet and went into the 1985 tour with hinault as favourite to win the overall classification.

moore picks up the story prior to lemond and hinault being on the same team and takes the reader through what felt to me like a boxing machine fought between teammates who should really have been fighting for each other not against each other although it was hinault rather than lemond who was throwing the most punches.  a similar incident that springs to mind is when lance armstrong and alberto contador were co-leaders with astana during the 2009 tour.  did armstrong pledge his allegiance to contador as hinault had undoubtedly done for lemond?  lemond had helped hinault to a then record equally fifth tour victory in 1985.  during that tour hinault had told lemond he would help the american win the 1986 tour.  it was a promise he would arguably break.

moore was fortunate enough to be able to interview both lemond and hinault as part of his research for the book in addition to interviewing a number of the other la vie claire team members including director koechli plus hampsten, bauer, bernard and team soigneur shelley verses.  moore's research extended further still to interviewing other key players such as closest rival urs zimmermann who finished third in the race.  there is no doubt that moore draws from strong first hand evidence gained in his many interviews in order to justify his facts and opinions.  he achieves this with an immensely entertaining flow bringing incite and attention to detail previously never written about the 1986 tour before, at least not in an english language publication that i am aware of.

the overriding feeling i take from reading this book is that hinault's intentions were always to look out for nobody other than himself.  hinault made it extremely difficult for lemond to take his first victory, so much so that lemond would rather hinault had been riding for a rival team than supposedly helping him to victory as a team mate.  lemond was made to feel so vulnerable by hinault that he became ultra paranoid and weary of everyone involved in the race with the exception only of his family and the small group team mates he knew he could trust.  the intrigue this creates plays out like the story line of a far fetched soap opera, only this story really happened.

whether you know the story of the 1986 tour or not 'slaying the badger' will certainly open the readers eyes to many nuances and subtleties surrounding the relationship between hinault and lemond and how the race played out amidst the charged and emotive atmosphere of one of the most high profile sporting events in the world.  was the 1986 tour the greatest ever?  in order to make an informed decision this book should really be considered a must read.

'slaying the badger' by richard moore is published by yellow jersey press.

sir chris hoy's keirin final ride

i unfortunately missed nearly all of the 2012 uci world track championships from melbourne due to the time difference between australia and the uk.  i did however manage to watch live coverage, just before paris- roubaix last sunday, of the men's keirin final which featured a stunning performance by sir chris hoy of great britain.  there is nobody who can handle a track bike better than this man.  below is footage of that final.

paris-roubaix: la legende

this 1996 documentary produced by television station france3 explores the rich history of the paris-roubaix bicycle race.  it is all in french but for the non-french speaking viewers out there it is still worth watching for the fantastic old footage of what is arguably the ultimate one day classic.
